Liberated

I wrote this one as a goodbye letter to my family when I wanted to leave the country. And yes, I had Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger in my head. So what?

Liberation isn’t a basic human right

It takes guts and gives you glory, the price of a good fight

It takes stubborn will and inner strength and the tears you cried at night

But most of all it takes desire to own your own life

It takes everything I didn’t know I had

I had to dig in deep to a place I’d never been to

But now I’m on my way

Nothing you can do to make me stay

And it’s all thanks to you

Thank you for every time you laughed in my face

Thank you for letting me know how low my limits are

Thank you for making sure I understood

That no matter how hard I try I can’t get far

Thank you for pushing me to start

‘Cause now I can see just how blind you have been

Now I can see the hell I’m in for what it really is

Now I can see a better future

Without you to hold me down, oh, this is it

I’m finally liberated

Who said I can’t write professionally

Who said my songs will never amount to anything

Who said my brains are not enough

Well they’re sure enough for me

Who said I can’t be what I want to be

I’ll show you a determination you couldn’t have seen through to

Now I’m on my way

To my liberation, to my way

And it’s all thanks to you

Thank you for every time you laughed in my face

Thank you for letting me know how low my limits are

Thank you for making sure I understood

That no matter how hard I try I can’t get far

Thank you for pushing me to start

‘Cause now I can see just how blind you have been

Now I can see the hell I’m in for what it really is

Now I can see a better future

Without you to hold me down, oh, this is it

I’m finally liberated

It’s time for me to go now so I can find myself

‘Cause I won’t be another girl to put away on a shelf

Thank you for always loving me, trying to do by me well

And for showing me just how loud I can yell

Thank you for every time you laughed in my face

Thank you for letting me know how low my limits are

Thank you for making sure I understood

That no matter how hard I try I can’t get far

Thank you for pushing me to start

‘Cause now I can see just how blind you have been

Now I can see the hell I’m in for what it really is

Now I can see a better future

Without you to hold me down, oh, this is it

I’m finally liberated

Liberation isn’t a basic human right

It takes guts and gives you glory, but it’ll feel good when you win the fight
